Stages of Human Memory
Stages
of Human Memory
Sensory Memory
-
Information stores that hold an exact
copy of stimuli for a very short period of time.
e.g.
color, shape, sound
Short Term Memory
(STM)
-
The information store that retains the
information as we consciously work on it.
e.g.
telephone number, scientific names
Long Term Memory
(LTM)
-
Information store that is permanent
e.g.
minutes to lifetime, LTM if not rehearsed can be forgotten
Forgetting
-
The inability to recall something
previously known to the mind.
Causes of Forgetting
-
Retrieval Failure
Forgetting
is due to inability to recall the information.
-
Decay Theory
Information
stored in LTM gradually fades when it is not used.
-
Interference Theory
Forgetting
in LTM is due to the influence of other learning
Retention
-
The ability to recall or recognize
what has been learned or experience.
Interference
-
The act or an instance of hindering,
obstructing or impeding.
